179 people are killed when a plane in South Korea veers off the runway and crashes.
According to the Associated Press, which cited the National Fire Agency (NFA) of South Korea, 179 passengers were killed when a Jeju Air plane went off a runway and struck a concrete fence.
According to the Yonhap News Agency, the catastrophic crash—one of the deadliest in the nation’s history—was caused by faulty landing gear.
The incident happened Sunday morning local time at Muan International Airport in Muan County, South Jeolla Province, some 180 miles south of Seoul, and involved a Boeing 737-800 carrying 175 passengers and six crew members operated by Jeju Air, a low-cost airline in South Korea.
According to the fire department, 84 women, 82 men, and 11 other people whose genders were not immediately apparent have been recognized as victims thus far. There were two survivors.
Emergency personnel recovered two individuals, both crew members who were conscious, according to the NFA. About nine hours after the incident, three people were still unaccounted for.

After that, the pilot called for a “mayday” signal, and a few minutes later, the aircraft caught fire.
“A bird strike is thought to have caused it. In a witness testimony, one surviving crew member stated, “Smoke came out of one of the engines and then it exploded,” according to Yonhap.
There were 181 individuals on board Jeju Air Flight 7C2216, including 2 pilots, 4 flight attendants, and 175 passengers. According to Yonhap, the two survivors were both crew members who were pulled from the rear of the aircraft during the initial search.
