The opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Paralympics took place in Paris, France on August 28, 2024. After their outstanding accomplishments in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, India sent its largest-ever squad of 84 competitors to the Paralympic Games in Paris. India made history at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games by winning 19 medals, which was a record for the country. There were six bronze, eight silver, and five gold medals among them.
Avani Lekhara, who became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in shooting at the Paralympics, had one of the most memorable performances in Tokyo. She broke the previous Paralympic record with her outstanding performance in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 category. The gold medal that Sumit Antil won in the men’s F64 javelin throw was 68.56 mt.

Cementing his legacy in Indian para-sports, two-time gold medallist Devendra Jhajharia, who is currently the president of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), added a silver medal to his collection in the men’s F46 javelin throw event. Bhavina Patel, meanwhile, became the first table tennis player from India to earn a Paralympic medal when she took home the silver in the women’s singles Class 4 event.
