When Ranya Rao used her husband Jatin Hukkeri’s credit card to purchase round-trip tickets from Bengaluru to Dubai, it raised questions about his possible involvement in the gold smuggling case.
In addition, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) searched nine of Mr. Hukkeri’s properties in Bengaluru. The Karnataka High Court issued an interim injunction prohibiting the DRI from making an arrest. Ranya Rao told DRI investigators she had calls from unidentified numbers telling her to carry the gold. She claimed during interrogation that she watched YouTube tutorials to understand how to hide gold.
A tall man in a gown gave the gold to Ranya Rao, who told police she was supposed to pick it up from Gate A of Terminal 3 at Dubai Airport. She maintained that she had never before attempted gold smuggling and that this was her first time.
Ranya Rao is denied bail by the court for arrest
Kannada actress Harshavardhini Ranya, also known as Ranya Rao, was charged of smuggling gold, but her bail request was denied by a Special Court of Economic Offenses here on Friday.Tarun Raju, the case’s second accused, has been placed under judicial detention for a period of 15 days while the investigation is ongoing.
Ranya is now being held at the Parappana Agrahara Jail here. She is the stepdaughter of DGP rank officer K Ramachandra Rao. When Ranya arrived at Kempegowda International Airport from Dubai on March 3, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) confiscated gold bars valued at Rs 12.56 crore.
Gold jewelry valued at Rs 2.06 crore and Indian money worth Rs 2.67 crore were found during DRI’s subsequent searches at her home. Authorities found out during questioning that Tarun Raju was complicit in the smuggling scheme, allegedly organizing the distribution and transportation of the gold around India. Both were arrested and charged under the applicable provisions of the Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act and the Customs Act.
Three days later, the DRI brought him before the court, which placed him under judicial detention for a period of fifteen days.
After searching Ms. Ranya’s home, authorities found gold jewelry valued at ₹2.06 crore and Indian money totaling ₹2.67 crore, in addition to gold bars valued at ₹12.56 crore that had been confiscated from her at Kempegowda International Airport.
The Deccan Herald claimed that a police official at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru has disclosed that actor Ranya Rao was repeatedly given VIP treatment at the request of her stepfather, senior IPS officer DGP K Ramachandra Rao. This is a new development in the case.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), which had been keeping tabs on the actor’s travels for a while and suspected her of employing a well-known smuggling pattern, observed her frequent trips to Dubai, according to investigators looking into the case. On her most recent return from Dubai, authorities detained her at the airport and confiscated 12 gold bars of foreign origin from her possession.
Basappa Billur, also known as Basavaraj, a head constable assigned to the airport, reportedly told DRI officials in his statement that he had personally helped Ranya get around routine security checks.
He stated that he had been told several times to make it easier for the relatives of senior police officers to travel. The report also stated that he specifically acknowledged receiving direct orders from DGP Ramachandra Rao to guarantee Ranya and his relatives a smooth journey.
