The Congress is set to stage a nationwide protest on Thursday over the US short seller Hindenburg Research’s allegations against SEBI chief Madhabi Puri Buch and her husband Dhaval Buch.
The party is demanding the Securities and Exchange Board of India chairman’s resignation and a joint parliamentary committee probe into the Adani Group issue.
In a new study released earlier this month, Hindenburg Research claimed that Madhabi Puri Buch and her husband have investments in offshore companies connected to the alleged financial misdeeds of the Adani Group.
Additionally, 18 months after releasing its “damning report” on Adani, the US investment research firm claimed that “SEBI has shown a surprising lack of interest in Adani’s alleged undisclosed web of Mauritius and offshore shell entities.”
The husband and wife team, however, has dismissed the accusations as unfounded and insisted that their financial records are transparent. Based on a limited amount of publicly available material, the Adani Group has further described the claims as hostile and deceitful.
“The Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh stated that the Indian National Congress is going to hold twenty press conferences tomorrow all over the country to emphasize the need for a JPC into the Modani Maha Ghotala, which has significant implications for the economy and for crores of small investors – for whom the integrity of capital market regulators is essential.”
