Modi in BRICKS. On the fringes of today’s BRICS conference in Kazan, Russia, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had their first bilateral discussions in five years. This follows major actions taken by China and India to resolve the neighboring countries’ border conflict.
Following an agreement between the two nations to resume routine patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, PM Modi and Xi Jinping met for the first time in five years.
“I can confirm that there will be a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping tomorrow on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit,” said Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in a statement on Tuesday.

Modi extended an invitation to Putin to attend the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit in India the following year. A senior Kremlin adviser told Reuters that Russia appreciated the peace offer on Ukraine that China and Brazil had proposed. According to Interfax, the suggestion was addressed in bilateral meetings that took place in Kazan on the fringes of the BRICS gathering.
In the central city of Kazan, over 20 leaders from China, India, Turkey, and Iran are meeting to talk about topics like the ongoing Middle East crisis and the creation of an international payment system led by the BRICS.In 2009, the BRIC countries—Brazil, Russia, India, and China—convened their first leaders’ conference in Russia.
After South Africa joined in 2010, the organization was renamed, and in 2011, the nation attended the first BRICS meeting. It was founded by Russia.
In his speech to the Brics summit in Kazan on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the nations to band together in the fight against terrorism and the funding of terrorism. Additionally, he emphasized the necessity of reforming international organizations such as the UN Security Council, which has been under fire for failing to halt the Israel-Gaza conflict.
On the eve of the BRICS summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi informed Russian President Vladimir Putin that he desired peace in Ukraine and that New Delhi was prepared to assist in bringing an end to the bloodiest conflict in Europe since World War Two.
After the United States and its allies in Europe and Asia attempted to isolate Russia over the war, Putin, who in February 2022 deployed tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine, wants the BRICS summit to highlight the growing influence of the non-Western world.
The BRICS, which make up 45% of the world’s population and 35% of its GDP, are hosting a summit conference that Russia expects 22 leaders to attend, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, who arrived on Tuesday.
Putin, who is portrayed by the West as a war criminal, said Russia and India had a “privileged strategic partnership” and congratulated Prime Minister Modi for accepting the offer to visit Kazan, a city on the banks of the Volga.
